STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result and is meant to help you structure your answers to those questions. The benefit of the STAR method is that it should help you provide clear and concise answers — be specific, but don't get caught up in the details.

How exactly do you use the STAR method?

Knowing what the acronym stands for is only the first step—you need to know how to use it. Follow this step-by-step process to give the best STAR interview answers.

1. Lay out the *situation.*

2. Highlight the *task.*

3. Share how you took *action.*

4. Discuss the *results.*

A STAR method example answer
  • It’s making sense now, isn’t it? Here’s one more example for some added clarity.

    If the interviewer says: “Tell me about a time when you had to be very strategic in order to meet all of your top priorities.”

    Your response might be (just, you know, don’t actually say “situation” and so forth):

    Situation: "In my past deals job, I was placed accountable for the progress to a completely new client relationship the executives (CRM) framework — on top of taking care of my everyday deals calls and obligations."
    Task: "The objective was to have the movement to the new CRM information base finished by the beginning of Q3, without neglecting any of my own marketing projections beneath my objectives."
    Action: "That's what to do, I must be extremely cautious about how I dealt with my time. So I closed off an hour on my schedule every day to devote exclusively to the CRM relocation.
